Residents demand sidewalks on Old Bainbridge Road
The picturesque canopy trees lining Old Bainbridge Road are a hallmark of Tallahassee’s charm. Yet, for pedestrians, the road poses significant risks due to its lack of continuous sidewalks. Residents and community members are speaking out, emphasizing the urgent need for safer walking routes.
Luisa Miller, a longtime resident of Old Bainbridge Road, described the dangers of walking in the area.
“Sometimes there are sidewalks only on one side of the street, and then sometimes there are little curbs that are simply too close to traffic,” Miller said. “I just wouldn’t suggest anyone trying to walk in the area.”
For residents like Miller, the lack of walking spaces is a daily headache. However, the issue affects others too. Students who depend on school buses encounter even greater risks when they step off directly into traffic. The vehicles passing close by heighten the danger, which has left many parents increasingly worried about their children’s safety.
Daniel Rodriguez, a local college student who frequently walks along Old Bainbridge Road, shared his concerns about the lack of pedestrian infrastructure.
“I walk this road almost every day to get to the bus stop,” Rodriguez explained. “With no sidewalks, I feel like I’m playing a game of chance every time I cross the street or even walk near it.”
Leon County Schools Bus Coordinator Lacardo Henderson said the district is working to minimize risks for students.
“What we do to try to solve the problem is put, for smaller kids, stops at addresses closer to their homes so they don’t have to walk,” Henderson said.
According to the city’s website, plans exist to improve water infrastructure along Old Bainbridge Road between Tharpe Street and Fred George Road, yet sidewalk upgrades have not been proposed.
The lack of sidewalks is not merely a hassle; it’s a growing safety issue impacting the health of children, students and nearby residents. Community supporters argue that building sidewalks would improve walkability and create a safer atmosphere for everyone.
As Tallahassee continues to grow, the call for safer pedestrian routes on Old Bainbridge Road grows louder. Residents hope that city officials will prioritize infrastructure improvements to ensure the safety of everyone who walks this iconic stretch of road.
